ampules
$19.35
Due to Flinn’s unique safety packaging, truck shipment is no longer required.
The total volume of bromine in these ampules is about 1 mL.
HAZARD ALERT: Highly toxic by inhalation and ingestion; severe skin
irritant; very strong oxidizer; reacts violently with many organic compounds;
very hazardous substance even in this small ampule. LD50 2600 mg/kg. TLV
0.66 mg/m3.
Storage: Inorganic #2. Store in ampule (before single use). Since the
bromine is in a sealed, glass ampule it will not present
a vapor problem.
Disposal: #12a
Shelf Life: As packaged, excellent. This is meant to be a one-time-use
product.
Soluble: Most organic solvents; slightly in water.
Color and Odor: Dark red/brown with irritating, chlorinelike odor.
CAS No. 7726-95-6
Technical Note: Keep a supply of sodium thiosulfate solution (hypo) on
hand as a neutralizer when working with bromine.
Bromine Water
AP4502 kit $23.40
Safely prepare fresh bromine water in any amount in less than five minutes
with the Flinn Bromine Water Preparation Kit. Never again worry about the
storage, handling, and use of elemental bromine. With this kit, you’ve eliminated
the most corrosive chemical from your stockroom.
Kit contains all the ingredients and instructions to prepare 500 mL of fresh
bromine water using a traditional redox reaction.
HAZARD ALERT: Toxic by inhalation and ingestion; skin irritant.
Disposal: #12a
Shelf Life: Fair. Bromine vapors degrade bottle caps over time. To avoid
corrosion of metals in storage area, always store in a Flinn Saf-Stor™ Can.
Color and Odor: Red/brown with irritating, chlorinelike odor.
Technical Note: Keep a supply of sodium thiosulfate solution (hypo) on
hand as a neutralizer when working with bromine.

Simple and Safe
Bromine Packaging
Elemental bromine is sold in a sealed 1-g
ampule. The ampule is scored to allow the
science instructor to easily break it into
50 mL of distilled water to prepare bromine
water.
Bromine—Quietly Destructive
Bromine attacks metals. Bromine vapor leaves a container and slowly
but surely destroys all nearby metal surfaces. Our heat-sealed, single-use
ampule solves this bromine vapor problem. If you already have bromine
in a capped bottle and want to minimize further damage, place the bottle
in a plastic bag and seal it with a twist tie. Then place the bagged bromine
bottle inside a paint can containing cat litter (see Flinn Chem-Saf™ Bags
and Saf-Stor™ Cans on page 1144). Replace the metal can about every
18–24 months.
