Balloon Cars Challenge—
Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Each group constructs and tests an easy-to-assemble
balloon-powered car prototype. Next students
use their knowledge of forces and Newton’s laws to
identify variables that may affect the car’s performance.
Modifications are then made to the basic
design in order to investigate one or more variables.
Finally the redesigned cars are put to the test—who
will win the challenge? A fun and memorable activity
to engage students in science and engineering practices!
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP7922 Balloon Cars Challenge—Guided-Inquiry Kit $55.35
Balloon Rockets—Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students investigate Newton’s laws of motion and rocket
thrust. Students tether a balloon to fishing line stretched across the room and then
must find a successful combination of orientation, drag, and thrust that will launch
the balloon across the room. The task requires students to run various trials and
then modify their balloon rockets based on what they learn in each trial. A fun and
stimulating lab that your students will never forget! Includes detailed background
information, instructions and valuable Teacher Notes with teaching tips and answers
to pre- and post-lab questions.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. A balloon refill package is available
separately.

AP6927 Balloon Rockets—Guided-Inquiry Kit $41.80
Cartesian Diver Construction—
Super Value Kit
By: Bob Becker
Kirkwood H.S., Kirkwood, MO
Students learn the relationship between pressure and air volume and how air
volume acts to regulate buoyancy by constructing cartesian divers made of simple
equipment and materials. Procedures for constructing 11 different types of cartesian
divers are provided.
Super Value Kit is complete with 100 pipets and hex nuts. Requires water and twoliter
soda bottles. Includes Flinn Exclusive STEM Integration Guide.

AP9082 Cartesian Diver Construction—Super Value Kit $32.65
Mousetrap Cars—
Super Value Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: Brad Christensen,
Illinois State University, Normal, IL
It’s off to the races! Students become real-world
engineers as they investigate the various parts of
a mousetrap car to determine each part’s effect
on the car’s performance. With this exclusive
kit, students plan and carry out investigations to
test variables of wheel diameter, hub diameter
and length of the lever arm. Kit includes enough
materials for six cars! Students analyze the quantitative data they collect in order to
design a solution to a problem with particular specifications.
Super Value Kit is resuable and complete for six student groups.

Cartesian Diver Design Challenge—
Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
After testing a basic diver, students are challenged to create divers that retrieve,
descend in a particular order and even spin! This STEM activity helps students
practice critical thinking and incorporates engineering design. Choose one challenge
or do all three! Connect engineering design to density, Boyle’s law and pressure.
Enough materials are included for each group to design and test ten Cartesian divers.
Reproducible student handouts and valuable Teacher Notes complete the kit.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP7926 Cartesian Diver Design Challenge—Guided-Inquiry Kit $75.50
Up, Up and Away—
Hot Air Balloon Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Groups construct and launch their own giant hot air balloon.
Students will learn how hot air balloons lift, stay afloat and eventually
descend. A unique balloon launcher apparatus is included
for safe and successful launches. Includes instructions and
materials needed to construct fifteen 3' x 2' hot air balloons! A heat
gun or propane torch is required and sold separately. Complete
for 30 students working in pairs. Includes Flinn Exclusive STEM
Integration Guide.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP6310 Up, Up and Away—Hot Air Balloon Laboratory Kit $74.60
AP6319 Heat Gun 77.55
AP6329 Hot Air Balloon Tissue Replacement Pack 31.35
Science of Sailing—
Newton’s Third Law Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
During their experiments, students discover the advantages and disadvantages of
both a triangular sail and a square sail—only one will provide forward motion into the
wind. An educational way to learn the basics of sailing, without getting your feet wet!
Kit includes complete reproducible student handouts and instructions with sample
data and answers to all questions.
Complete for eight student groups. All materials are reusable. Minimal assembly is
required. Includes Flinn Exclusive STEM Integration Guide.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP6933 Science of Sailing—Newton’s Third Law Laboratory Kit $64.90
Discovering the Speed of Sound
in Air—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students slowly lift the tube and tuning fork out of the
water until they “hear” the resonance then measure the
length of the tube above the water’s surface and use this
value to calculate the wavelength and speed of sound.
Simple activity is easy to do and yields great results—average
error is less than 2%. Kit comes complete with student
activity sheets, detailed Teacher Notes and sample data.
The experiment requires a tuning fork set ranging from 256
Hz to 512 Hz, which can be shared.
Complete for one student group. Classroom Set is
complete for 8 student groups. Support stand and two
extension clamps are also required and available separately.
Includes Flinn Exclusive STEM Integration Guide.
