PSworks™ Photogate Timer
By: The Flinn Staff
An inexpensive and accurate photogate timer for all your high-speed timing needs!
Measure time to 0.0001 seconds with no fuss. The Flinn PSworks™ Photogate Timer
is easy-to-use with five common function modes specifically used in the physical
science classroom. Measure the time interval between two gates, measure the
time to pass through one gate, determine the acceleration due to gravity using
a picket fence, measure the period of a pendulum as well as the frequency of a
rotating object. These five functions are perfect for accurately calculating instantaneous
speed, average speed, acceleration, period or frequency. Timer holds 20
data points, allowing students to observe the actual experiment as it happens and
then scroll through the data points after the experiment is complete. Photogates
clamp to all Flinn PSworks™ equipment. This universal photogate can be used as
a stand-alone product for most physical science experiments that require fast
timing. Two photogates, one timer, connector cords and AC adapter are included.
Threaded support rods for photogates are available and sold separately.

Stroboscope, Handheld
Determine the speed of a spinning fan blade. Make a vibrating string appear at rest.
Conclusively show interference patterns in a ripple tank. These experiments and
more are possible using this durable and affordable handheld stroboscope. Use the
coarse and fine adjustment knobs to accurately “dial in” a flash rate from 100 ±0.2
to 10,000 ±6 flashes per minute. Fast enough to “stop” a fan blade and exact enough
to measure the blade’s speed to less than 0.2% error. The four-digit LED display
is easy to read when performing experiments. Xenon flashlamp can operate continuously
for 5–30 minutes, depending on the flash rate.

Speed adjustment of this xenon flashlamp stroboscope is a snap due to its instantly
responding LED display. The main speed and Vernier (fine adjustment) allows you
to fine-tune your flash rate to 0.1/second (±0.08 flashes/second)! The output is
adjustable from 3.0 to 83.3 flashes per second. The sturdy 20 cm3 steel box has large
urethane bumpers to keep it from moving during use. The carrying handle on the
top of the unit makes it easy to move from class to class. Operates on 115 V/60 Hz
grounded and comes with operating directions.

Investigate how rotating objects appear to stop moving or switch directions under
a flashing light. Bright digital display shows the flash rate so students can collect
quantitative measurements to calculate the speed of rotating, oscillating and vibrating
objects. Adjustable flash rate of 1–255 flashes per second. Four AA batteries are
required and available separately. 21/2" x 5" x 1".
