Use a Clinometer to Find
the Height of an Object
1. To find the height of a tree, for example, measure off 100 meters from the
trunk.
2. Point the clinometer at the top of the tree to find the angle of elevation. Let’s
say it is 20°.
3. On a sheet of paper, make a scale drawing with 1cm = 10 m, so draw a line
10 cm long.
4. With a protractor, draw a 20° angle at one end of the line and an upright
from the other. Where the lines meet gives the height of the tree.
5. Measure the upright, which should be about 3.7 cm. The actual height of the
tree is approximately 3.7 x 10 = 37 m.
6. Add the viewing height (your own height); for example 1.6 meters. The tree
is therefore 38.6 meters high.

Make Your Own Compass
Materials:
Cork (or other small floating material, such as a milk jug cap or the bottom of
a foam cup)
Dish, 9–12" in diameter, filled with 1" of water
Magnet
Needle (or a straightened paper clip)
Procedure:
1. Turn the needle into a magnet by stroking the magnet in one direction along
the needle 10–20 times.
2. Place the cork or other floating device in the center of the dish of water. This
“float on water” technique creates a nearly frictionless bearing.
3. Center the “magnetic” needle on the float. It very slowly will point north. You
have created a compass!
