Boiling in a Syringe
By: The Flinn Staff
By decreasing the vapor pressure inside the syringe, hot water can
be boiled at less than 100 ºC. As the water boils, the vapor is pressurizing
the area above the liquid.
Concepts: Vapor pressure, boiling, phase change.

AP7448 Boiling in a Syringe—Demonstration Kit $20.75
Salting Out—
Density Bottle Kit
By: Lynn Higgins, ACS Polymer,
Ambassador, MO
Two layers of beads are suspended
in the middle of a bottle. Give the
bottle a shake, and the beads move to
opposite ends. The beads then slowly
move back to the starting position.
How does this happen?
Concepts: Density, non-polar vs.
polar, solutions, immiscibility.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP7931 Salting Out—Density Bottle Kit $28.10
Density Demonstration Bottles
By: Lee Marek, Retired,
Naperville North H.S., Naperville, IL
Students will be mesmerized by watching the layers
in these bottles
move and separate as they are turned
upside-down, swirled and shaken.
Concepts: Density, polar/nonpolar, immiscibility, hydrogen
bonding.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP6684 Density Demonstration Bottles $39.00
Flinn’s Exploring Chemistry™
Chemical Bonding Package See page 262.
Intermolecular Attractions
By: Mark Langella, Mahopac H.S., Mahopac, NY
Molecules can’t be seen, but we can see the forces between
molecules: Use this set of four demonstrations to show students
what happens when molecules attract each other—or don’t!
Concepts: Surface tension, hydrogen bonding, dipole–dipole
attractions, cohesive and adhesive forces, London dispersion
forces.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP6928 Intermolecular Attractions—Multi-Demonstration Kit $54.90
Kinetic Molecular Theory
By: The Flinn Staff
These three demonstrations provide visual
evidence for this important concept. Visualizing
molecules in motion helps students understand
and compare the kinetic and potential energy of
molecules in the solid, liquid and gas phases.
Includes:
Concepts: Conservation of mass, density, gas
laws, kinetic molecular theory.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP7359 Kinetic Molecular Theory—Multi-Demonstration Kit $70.80
Mass Is Conserved—Volume Is Not! Chemical
By: The Flinn Staff
Show students that adding two identical
volumes does not always give twice the
volume when combined. Three different
demonstrations are performed.
Concepts: Conservation of mass, intermolecular
Red, White and Blue Density Column
By: The Flinn Staff
The density column contains three liquid layers consisting
of toluene, methyl alcohol and water. Methyl alcohol is
“salted out” and separated from water by adding potassium
carbonate.
Concepts: Solubility, density, miscible and immiscible liquids,
salting-out effect.
Note: Perform this demonstration in a fume hood or wellventilated
lab.

AP7089 Red, White and Blue Density Column—
Chemical Demonstration Kit

Surface Tension Jar
By: Patrick Funk,
Pickerington High H.S, Pickerington, OH
Place a laminated card over the screen-covered mouth of a
jar. Flip the jar over and observe as the card stays in place.
Remove the card and watch the water appear to “float” on air!
Concepts: Surface tension, air pressure, cohesion.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP6648 Surface Tension Jar—Demonstration Kit $9.30
Chemical Demonstration Kits—Polymers
Fluorescent Slime
By: Thomas T. Earles, Retired, Culpeper County H.S., Culpeper, VA
Slime is prepared in a solution of fluorescein and
bromophenol
blue. The resulting slime appears
green in reflected light, red in transmitted light and
bright fluorescent green in ultraviolet light.
Concepts: Polymers, fluorescence, light spectra.
Note: An ultraviolet light is required and available
separately.
See free video at flinnsci.com.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP9081 Fluorescent Slime—Chemical Demonstration Kit $23.10
AP9030 Ultraviolet Light 47.10
