Solubility and Temperature—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students will measure saturation temperatures for six different concentrations of
potassium nitrate and then make a solubility curve from the data. Graphical analysis
of the data allows students to determine at a glance whether a solution is unsaturated,
saturated or supersaturated. Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed
background information, Teacher Notes with sample data and answers to questions
and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Solubility Matters—
Measuring the Ksp of Calcium
Iodate—Student Laboratory Kit
By: Bob Lewis, Retired, Downers Grove North H.S., Downers Grove, IL
John Little, Retired, St. Mary’s H.S., Stockton, CA
Sodium thiosulfate solution is added dropwise from a pre-weighed bottle to a saturated
solution of calcium iodate that has been mixed with excess potassium iodide.
The iodate/iodide reaction generates elemental iodine, which undergoes reduction
when sodium thiosulfate is added. Starch is used as an indicator—the tell-tale blue
color of the starch/iodine complex disappears instantly at the endpoint of the titration.
Students calculate the concentration of iodate ion, the concentration of calcium ion
and, finally, the solubility product constant—Ksp value—for calcium iodate. Includes
reproducible student handouts, detailed background information, complete Teacher
Notes with sample data and answers to all questions and all necessary chemicals
and consumable supplies.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Fifteen reusable serological pipets and
pipet bulbs are recommended and available separately.

Chemical engineers use mixtures of chemicals to fine tune the properties of a
commercial product. In this digitally enhanced lab, students will make their own ink
and synthesize carbon quantum dots while learning about different types of mixtures
and their properties.

The Colorful Chemistry of
Sugar, Water and Density—
Guided-Inquiry Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Challenge students to create a tower of color by using just three ingredients: water,
food dye and sugar. Students must mix the ingredients in varying ratios to produce
solutions of different density and color. When the solutions are added to a tall cylinder
in the correct order, the different colored solutions separate into layers owing to
their varying densities. The result is a beautiful tower with multiple layers of color.
Students can be true to their school by using school colors or any colors of their
choice. Instructions, sugar and food dye are included.
Complete for 24 students working in groups of 4. Separatory funnels and rubber
tubing required and available separately.
