Seeing Is Believing—Color
“Magic” with Cone Cells—
Super Value Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Challenge your students’ sense of
sight by saturating their cone cells!
After focusing on an “oddly colored”
image for one minute, students will
be amazed at what they “see” when
they look down at a sheet of white
paper. The colors magically change to
the “familiar” colors of the object, right before their eyes! This is a great way to teach
students about how the eye works, colorblindness and the primary colors of light.
Kit includes four cards each of four different images—an apple, a flower, the U.S. flag
and the continent of Africa—16 cards total. All cards are printed on 81/2" x 51/2" durable
card stock for years of repeated use.
Super Value Kit is complete for 32 students working in pairs. All materials are reusable.

Color Wheel Light Reflection Kit
Clearly demonstrate that white light is composed of all
the colors of the rainbow. This 23-cm diameter sturdy
plastic color wheel comes with a plastic handle that
attaches to the center of the wheel. Start the wheel
spinning with the included cord and students see
white—a combination of all the reflected colors. Stop
the wheel and the separate colors are once again seen.
The white portions of the wheel increase the amount of reflected light for better viewing
across the classroom. Includes Teacher’s Guide with sample questions.

Combining Colored Light—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
In this teacher-led demonstration, white light
from an overhead projector passes through
three holes in a plastic sheet. Each hole in
the plastic is covered with a transparent
sheet of colored acetate—one red, one green
and one blue. This allows red, green and blue
light to be projected as three separate circles onto a white wall or screen. With the
help of convex lenses, the three projected colors are refracted and overlap with one
another on the screen to create white light. Detailed Teacher Notes and a reproducible
student worksheet are provided.
Note: Requires an overhead projector.

Beyond the Rainbow—
Infrared and UV Light
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Two “enlightening” demonstrations
reveal evidence for light energy beyond
the visible spectrum.
• The first demonstration using a
glass prism and four thermometers
simulates William Herschel’s 1800
discovery of infrared radiation. As
students observe and record temperature data from various parts of the spectrum,
they will be astonished to discover the greatest increase in temperature occurs
just beyond the red portion of the spectrum.
• The second demonstration follows Johann Ritter’s quest in 1801 to detect invisible
energy beyond the violet end of the spectrum by chemical means. The evidence is
clear as students observe photosensitive paper after it’s exposed to the spectrum
produced by passing sunlight through a glass prism.
Note: Refill packages of photosensitive paper are available separately. An 11" x 17"
x 9" cardboard box with a lid is needed for both demonstrations, but not included.

AP6423 Color Filters, Paddles $4.00
UV Filter Set
A common misconception is that ultraviolet light is
purple in color—it's actually invisible! Demonstrate
this fascinating concept visually with two plastic
filters. One prevents the passage of UV light and the
other allows it. When these filters are placed over a
special UV fluorescent ink and then under an ultraviolet
light, a message appears under the one of the filters, but not the other. You can
also use the yellow card to test windows, eye glasses, and safety glasses for their
ability to filter UV light. Set includes detailed instructions with activity suggestions,
yellow card printed with UV sensitive ink, and two plastic filters, 2.75" diameter.
