Chemical Demonstration Kits—
Thermodynamics, continued
Zinc Pyrotechnics
By: The Flinn Staff
Place a beaker with very small amounts of zinc dust,
ammonium nitrate and a catalyst in a fume hood.
Add two drops of water to the mixture and watch
as sparks, smoke and excitement fill the air. Must
be performed on a heat-resistant surface in a fume
hood or outdoors.
Concepts: Exothermic reactions, catalysts.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP9117 Zinc Pyrotechnics—Chemical Demonstration Kit $24.70
Whoosh Bottle
By: John J. Fortman, Retired
Wow your students with a whoosh! Students just love to see
the blue alcohol flame shoot out of the mouth of the bottle and
watch yellow dancing flames pulsate in the jug as more air is
drawn in.
Concepts: Thermodynamics, combustion, molar relationships.
Note: A safety shield and fire blanket are highly recommended
when performing this demonstration.

AP5943 Whoosh Bottle—Chemical Demonstration Kit $37.35
Chemical Demonstration Kits—
Visible Spectra
Absorption Spectroscopy
By: John Brodemus, Richards H.S., Oak Lawn, IL
The kit uses the ability of a
diffraction grating to dissect light
that is passed through various
colored solutions. Students view
band absorption as a continuous
spectrum filtered by one of
CHEMISTRY CHEMICAL DEMONSTRATION KITS
the provided solutions. Using this
data and a color wheel, allow students to make their own predictions. Students also
observe dark line spectra from chloride solutions of erbium and praseodymium.
Concepts: Spectroscopy, visible light spectrum, absorbance.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP8823 Absorption Spectroscopy—Demonstration Kit $110.00
Oooh! Aaah! Style Flame Tests
By: Rhonda Reist, Olathe North High School, Olathe, KS
Add a few milliliters of alcohol to several borosilicate
glass Petri dishes, place a small scoop of
metallic salt into each dish, then light the solutions
and wait for the ooohs and aaahs!
Concepts: Visible spectra.
Note: Perform this demonstration in a fume hood or
well-ventilated lab. A safety shield and fire blanket
are also highly recommended. Borosilicate glass
Petri dishes are required and available separately.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP9303 Oooh! Aaah! Style Flame Tests—Chemical Demonstration Kit $48.25
GP3019 Petri Dish, Borosilicate Glass, Pkg./6 47.25
Safety-First Flame Tests
By: The Flinn Staff
Put safety first with this unique flame
test demonstration! Coloring flames with
metallic salts is a great way to demonstrate
the emission spectra of metal salts.
By adding a pump of hand sanitizer to
different salts, the flames will burn in a
rainbow display. Borosilicate glass Petri dishes are required and available separately.
Concepts: Visible spectra.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP8481 Safety-First Flame Tests—Chemical Demonstration Kit $20.10
GP3019 Petri Dish, Borosilicate Glass, 100 x 15 mm, Pkg. of 6 47.25
Is There Sodium in Bananas? Flame Test
By: The Flinn Staff
Bananas are a good source of potassium—
but do they also contain sodium? This flame
test demonstration provides a safe method for
observing excited-state emission colors of metal
ions—no flammable solvents required!
Concepts: Properties of metals, atomic structure,
emission spectra, nutrients in food.
Note: Borosilicate glass Petri dishes are required
and available separately.

Color Flame Candles
Challenge students to identify the
unknown element(s) in the candles
by performing flame tests. Includes
3 candles of each color. Candles
are 2¼" x 3⁄8". Package of 12.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP7770 Color Flame Candles $4.40
Flame Test/Emission Spectroscopy
By: The Flinn Staff
Each element emits a specific wavelength of
light, thus a characteristic color, when excited
by a flame. This unique flame test kit produces
better results and is easier to perform than
the expensive platinum wire procedure. The
vivid colors last several minutes, allowing
students plenty of time to view the colored
flame through Flinn C-Spectra™.
Concepts: Absorption, emission, diffraction
grating, flame tests, emission spectra.
