Electricity and Magnetism—Motors, continued
Build a Dry Cell Battery—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Students build a simple dry cell battery
from household materials and then investigate
the battery’s electrical properties.
They may also test modifications of the
battery to improve its performance. By
connecting their batteries in series and
parallel and measuring the changes in
voltage and current, students also learn
about the properties of electric circuits. Concepts covered include electrodes, oxidation–
reduction reactions, voltaic cells, electric circuits, voltage and current. Includes
complete instructions with sample data and answers to all questions.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Multimeters are required for quantitative
measurements, and DC motors are recommended for each lab group; both are
available separately.

ELECTRICITY AND MAGNETISM—ELECTROCHEMISTRY continued on next page.
Motor, DC
Just add 1.5–6.0 volts of power and watch this efficient
little motor “hum” at 7,000–11,000 rpm. Includes connecting
wires with alligator clips. Optimum performance with
3.0–4.5 V.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP6041 Motor, DC $3.24
DC Motor Demonstration
Study electromagnetic forces with this pre-assembled
DC motor. The open structure resembles textbook
diagrams and allows students to see how the motor
works. Reverse the polarity of the magnets to change
the direction of rotation. Use the motor with a rheostat
to observe how speed changes are relative to current
changes. A power source of at least 1.5 V is required and
available separately. 5½" x 4½" x 2½".
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP7827 DC Motor Demonstration $16.80
Motor Kit, Electric
Demonstrate the conversion of electrical energy
to mechanical energy using this small electric
motor with attached wheel and axle. Motor runs
on regular or homemade batteries. Set includes
motor, attached wheel and axle, and a weight (for
lifting). Pulley cord or string required.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP4540 Motor Kit, Electric $15.50
Motor Set, Basic
Students first begin by constructing their own
motor parts such as the armature, commutator, and
brushes. They then assemble the motor parts, hook
up the power, and watch their motor run. All parts are
included and easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions
are provided. AA battery is required and available
separately.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP4635 Motor Set, Basic $11.00
AP1423 AA Alkaline Battery 2.40
Motor, Simple
The world’s simplest motor! Demonstrate the basic principles
of electromagnetism with a bit of wire, a magnet,
metal support stand, and a battery. Requires one D battery,
which is available separately.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP7828 Motor, Simple $6.25
AP1425 Battery, D 3.55
Motor, St. Louis
All the parts are clearly visible so you can show each component of a motor or
generator in operation. This remarkable teaching tool comes with instructions for:
1. Transformation of electrical to rotational mechanical
energy.
2. Transformation of rotational mechanical energy to electrical
energy.
3. Forces of magnetic field interactions.
4. Force on a current-carrying wire.
5. Electromagnetic induction in a conductor.
6. Induced electromotive force on an existing current.
Requires a low-voltage DC power supply.

Hofmann Electrolysis Apparatus
One-way glass stopcocks conveniently located on the top of
this high-quality apparatus allow for easy collection of gases
during electrolysis experiments. The large center reservoir
bulb will easily handle the liquid displacement from the two
side columns and prevent any overflow during your experiments.
Electrodes and directions included. Requires ring stand,
support clamp and a 9-V battery or DC power supply. Measures
41 x 17 cm.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP5879 Hofmann Electrolysis Apparatus $177.00
Hofmann Electrolysis
Demonstration Apparatus
Calibrated for precise measurements, this electrolysis apparatus
is of superior quality—providing accurate results that are quantifiable.
The clear glass collecting tubes are calibrated for easy
measurement and observation. While this apparatus is primarily
designed to hydrolyze water, it can be used for other compounds
as well. The apparatus has its own rugged ring stand base. The
built-in thistle tube and stopcocks make for easy no-mess filling.
Operates on a 9-V battery or DC power supply. Platinum electrodes
are included. Replacement glass assembly and electrodes
are available separately.
