Electricity and Magnetism—
Electromagnetism, continued
Primary/Secondary Coil
• Electromagnetic Induction
• Faraday’s Law of Induction
• Step-up and step-down transformers
• Induced current
• Induction of current vs. induction of voltage
• Lenz’s Law
These are just a few of the key concepts you can demonstrate with this quality
induction coil set. The easily accessible binding posts make circuit wire connections
easy. The tight wire windings on the coils provide outstanding induction results.
Comes complete with two coils, a soft metal core and complete instructions.

Air Core Solenoid
A versatile solenoid. Its large size allows for more
applications than smaller solenoids and can be used
with a cathode ray tube or current balance. Heavy
enamel #16 niclad copper wire is carefully wound
on a tough phenolic core. The coil has 570 turns and
the wire ends at easy-to-use binding posts on the
rigid plastic end plates. It can carry 10 amps intermittently
and 5 amps continuously without overheating.
Includes instructions and experiments. Solenoid is 15
cm long, 9 x 9-cm ends, and large 6-cm interior diameter.

AP5628 Air Core Solenoid $167.00
Superconductivity Demonstration Kit
Superconductivity is the spectacular characteristic
of the total disappearance
of electrical
resistance when a superconductor is cooled
below a critical temperature. Another important
property of superconductors is that if a
magnetic field is applied to the superconductor,
the effect of magnetization can be reversed.
This reversible magnetic behavior is called the Meissner Effect. It is this Meissner
Effect that would enable a train to levitate above its tracks. Since there would be
no friction between wheels and track, the train could operate while consuming
very little energy.
This unique demonstration kit will provide you with all the materials needed
(except liquid nitrogen) to successfully demonstrate the characteristics of superconductivity
and the Meissner Effect. Each demonstration kit includes a rugged
1" superconductor, a rare earth magnet, non-metallic forceps and one “how to”
instruction manual.

Electricity and Magnetism—Generators
Build a Simple AC Generator—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Create power! Demonstrate the fundamental principles
of generators by converting the spinning mechanical
energy into electrical energy that will light an LED.
In this simple, easy-to-make device, two powerful
neodymium magnets spinning in a coil of wire induce a
current, in accord with Faraday’s Law. You can also use
the device to show students the difference between
direct and alternating current. Includes complete instructions and a reproducible
student worksheet. Classroom Set includes enough materials for eight student groups.

AP7276 Build a Simple AC Generator—Classroom Set 139.00
Hand Generator
With a turn of the crank, students can conduct dozens
of hands-on experiments to study electromagnetism,
polarity, simple circuits, resistance and mechanical
work. Nylon-plastic gears and color-coded cord
and plug are designed for durability and long-lasting
performance. Sturdy, transparent case allows
students to see the movement of the inner components
of the generator. Supplies direct current with an output of up to 12 volts and 200
mA. When one hand generator is connected to another or to a low power source, it will
act as a motor. Replacement connecting leads and gear set are available separately.
Catalog No. Description Price/Each
AP6585 Hand Generator $75.00
AP6592 Replacement Connecting Leads for AP6585 18.95
AP6593 Replacement Gear Set for AP6585 19.75
Electromagnet Coil Set
Turn the electricity produced by the hand
generator into a powerful electromagnet
with the Electromagnet Coil Set. Students
determine how the strength of an electromagnet
is affected by the number of turns in the
coil and by the nature of the material inserted into the coil. Includes one 200-turn
coil, one 100-turn coil and 4 different cores: aluminum, copper, glass and iron. The
electromagnet coils can also be used with a 6V battery. Coils measure 48 x 17 mm
diameter; cores measure 55 x 5 mm diameter.

AP9786 Electromagnet Coil Set $72.05
Physical Science Laboratory Kits
What better way to learn how something works than to make it yourself! Our Flinnexclusive
“build-your-own” lab kits help develop students’ understanding of science
and technology. As students build models of everyday objects, they learn about and
appreciate the technological design process. Once construction is complete students
experiment with the models, developing their scientific skills of observation and analysis.
