Build Your Own
Conductivity Tester—
Student Laboratory Kit
By: David A. Katz, Retired, Wilmington, DE
Students safely discover the essential components of an electric circuit as they build
their very own audio conductivity testers. Once the testers are assembled, students
use the inquiry method to determine the conductivity of common solids and liquids.
Students also explore relative resistance as the volume and pitch of the buzzer varies
with conductivity. At the end of the lab, testers may be disassembled, ready to be built
again by the next class.

Investigating Electricity—
Activity-Stations Kit
Discover the basic principles of electricity with
this “series” of four engaging, hands-on experiments. Students explore the concepts
of electric current and voltage in series and parallel circuits. Using friction rods,
friction pads and an electroscope, students learn about electrostatics. Then they
compare different electrochemical cells to determine which one produces the most
electricity. Finally students determine how the thickness and length of a wire affect
its electrical resistance.

Design Challenge™
Students learn how to make a simple electric circuit and draw circuit diagrams. Next
they apply their knowledge of series and parallel circuits to wire a duplex outlet with
two lamps in which one lamp is controlled by a switch and the other is not.

Simple Circuits—Super
Value Laboratory Kit
Do your students know how to connect a
series or a parallel circuit? Students use lightbulbs and alligator-clipped wires to
build simple series and parallel circuits and study their characteristics. By observing
the brightness of the bulbs, students learn that the amount of electric current
flowing through the lightbulbs varies with different circuit configurations.
