Chemical Ion Flash Cards—
Super Value Game
By: Robert K. Weiss, Port Huron H.S., Port Huron, MI
Your students will benefit from these colorful and compact flash cards that provide
an easy and effective means for learning formulas, names and charges of common
ions through drilling and visual memorization techniques. Repetition helps students
as they learn to write chemical formulas and reactions. The front of each card has
the name of a monatomic or polyatomic cation or anion, and the back gives the ion
formula. The flash card set includes instructions with ample background information
on ions and formulas as well as nine tips and suggested activities to help you get
started. Be creative with these cards—use them for drills, quizzes, reviews, games—
you decide! Each set contains six brightly colored, student-size 13⁄4" x 41⁄4" sets and
one larger teacher-size 41⁄4" x 11" set of 50 chemical ion flash cards.
Super Value Game is complete for six student groups. All materials are reusable.

The Chemistry of Complex
Ions—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
In this two-part experiment, students investigate the properties of complex ions. In
Part 1, students form four complexes of the copper(II) ion and the cobalt(II) ion. First,
they must identify the chemical formula of each complex ion. They then use the color
of the solution to determine the wavelength of light absorbed by each complex ion.
Part 2 has students forming solutions of five different complexes of the copper(II) ion.
A series of combinations of these solutions are made, and the students determine
the relative stabilities of the five complexes based on the precipitates or complex
ions formed by the reactions. Includes reproducible student handouts, detailed
background information, Teacher Notes with sample data and answers to questions
and all necessary chemicals and consumable supplies.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.

Exploring Kinetics with
Galvanized Coatings—
Digital Content
By: The Flinn Staff
The term “galvanized” can be seen on everything from nails to washers to roofing
sheets, but what does it mean to galvanize something? Galvanized iron is produced
by coating iron with a very thin layer of metallic zinc, which protects the underlying
iron metal from rust or corrosion. Environmental factors like acid rain or airborne
contaminants can affect this coating. In this lab, students test these effects by
removing the galvanized coating with two different acids and comparing the kinetics
between them.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs.
