Magnets and
Magnetism—Super Value
Activity–Stations Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Explore the captivating world of magnetism with this all-in-one kit.
• Properties of Magnets—Learn about the nature of magnets by classifying materials
as magnetic or nonmagnetic and by feeling attractive and repulsive magnetic forces.
• Build an Electromagnet—Bridge the world between electricity and magnetism.
• Electromagnetic Induction—Investigate Faraday’s Law by building a simple galvanometer.
• Build a DC Motor—Apply the concept of electromagnetism to construct a model of
a working DC motor.
Easy-to-set-up lab stations allow different student groups to work independently
to examine a specific aspect of magnetism. Once one activity is complete, students
move on to the next lab station. Detailed instructions and Teacher Notes are provided.
Super Value Kit is complete for 16 student groups. All materials are reusable. 9-V
batteries are required and available separately.

Introduction to Magnets—
Super Value Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
In this hands-on introductory kit, students experiment with bar magnets to visibly see why
magnets “stick” to certain objects but not others. They test magnetic polarity and determine
what types of materials are magnetic. Lastly, students sprinkle iron filings over the
magnets to display the invisible magnetic fields that surround all magnets and see how
the magnetic fields are bent when two magnetic north poles repel and when north and
south poles attract. Includes detailed laboratory instructions and background information.
Full-size kits are complete for 8 student groups. Small-size kits are complete for 4
student groups. Refill kits contain materials only. All materials are reusable.

3-D Magnetic Field Jar—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Beautiful demonstration clearly reveals the shape and strength of the magnetic field.
Simply fill the special jar-and-tube assembly with oil, add iron filings, shake and
insert a magnet. The filings line up along the magnetic field, concentrating especially
at the poles where the field strength is greater. Seeing is believing, and this largescale
magnetic field is very visible—and persuasive!
Note: Neodymium magnets (sold separately) may be used to demonstrate other
magnetic field variations. Materials may be reused for many years!

Make a Print of a Magnetic
Field—Student Laboratory Kit
By: Stephen Fuller, Lincoln College Prep High School, Kansas City, MO
Help students visualize the lines of force of a magnetic field—permanently! This handson
activity combines science with art as students create beautiful, permanent prints of
a magnetic field using special photosensitive paper, iron filings, and a bar magnet. The
bar magnets included with the kit may be combined in different arrangements to explore
how the lines of force change with attraction or repulsion. The photosensitive paper may
be exposed using either sunlight or a UV lamp. Kit includes complete instructions with
reproducible student handouts, valuable Teacher Notes with answers to all questions,
and enough materials for eight groups of students. A total of 30 prints may be made.
