Animals—Living, Invertebrates
Water Bears
Hypsibius dujardini. Tardigrades are a phylum of invertebrates that are extremophiles.
They can survive at temperatures from just above absolute zero to boiling! Extreme
pressure, radiation, desiccation for a decade and even 10 days in the vacuum of space
will not kill an entire population of these tiny invertebrates. You can easily view these
fascinating organisms using a stereoscope or low power compound microscope.
★MAINTENANCE: Maintain Tardigrades by feeding them Chlamydomonas or other single-celled
green algae. Use chlorine-free spring water for all water exchanges. After aerating the culture with a
pipet, allow the Tardigrades to settle before harvesting. Using high power on a stereoscope, they will be
visible moving throughout the debris.

Isopods
Commonly known as “roly-polies” and “sow bugs” these small, harmless isopods
are convenient for classroom studies. They are easy to care for and fun to observe.
Supplied in two convenient package sizes. A state permit is required to ship to Utah. Not
available for Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
★MAINTENANCE: Prepare a layer of peat moss or dead leaves and twigs in the bottom of a waterproof,
covered container. Keep substratum damp by sprinkling water on the bottom layer when necessary.
Punch air holes in the cover of the container. Feed small slices of potato or carrot every 3–4 days. Remove
old food to avoid molding. Animals are prolific and can be maintained for long periods of time.

Praying Mantis Egg Cases
Viable mantis egg cases (ootheca) containing up to 150 eggs. Egg cases are deposited
in the fall, and the nymphs hatch in early spring. The praying mantis is notable
for a life cycle that demonstrates incomplete metamorphosis—developing from egg
to nymph to adult. Only available January through June 1. A state permit is required to
ship to Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.
★MAINTENANCE: In the classroom, the egg case should be fastened to a twig or branch and
placed in a warm location. Hatching will begin in about 4–6 weeks. Mantises are cannibalistic and must
be separated shortly after hatching. Maintain on a steady diet of live insects. If necessary, the egg cases
can be held in the refrigerator up to two months before hatching is induced.
