Transformation of E. coli with pGal™ (Blue Colony)™
In this experiment, the bacterial “transformants” acquire antibiotic resistance and
a blue color, following uptake of plasmid carried beta-galactosidase and ampicillin
resistance genes. The plasmid used, pGal™, is unique and designed specifically
to simplify the process. Cells provided are freeze-dried and ready to reconstitute
and use—eliminating the need for costly overnight shipping and preparation of
competent cells. Transformation and plating of cells requires 50 minutes—followed
by overnight incubation.
Kit contains materials sufficient for 10 lab groups—with each group preparing these
cell platings.

FB0313 Transformation of E. coli with pGal™ (Blue Colony)™ $141.00
Kit contains items that require freezing or refrigeration and will be shipped separately. Kit is supplied with
a redemption coupon for these items. Fax or mail in your request for delivery of these items two to three
weeks in advance.
Store Your Bacterial Cultures
Newly purchased cultures should be stored at room temperature in an upright position.
Most cultures will keep stored this way for 1–2 weeks without subculturing. Unique
storage requirements of some cultures will be provided with the cultures and special
directions should be followed.

Microbiology—Laboratory
Activities Manual
By: Kathy Van Hoeck, York H.S., Elmhurst, IL
The laboratory exercises answer key organizing
questions:
• What are microbes?
• Where can bacteria be found?
• How can we inhibit bacterial growth?
• What do bacteria need to grow?
• How can we tell one bacterium from another?
Each laboratory includes step-by-step directions, numerous teaching tips, detailed
background information, safety and disposal considerations, timeline, teaching
suggestions and sample data. 150 pages, 81/2" x 11", spiral-bound.
Microbiology laboratory work does assume access to sterilizing equipment (autoclave
or pressure cooker) as well as basic teacher skills in sterile technique.
