Buzzer in a Vacuum
Students are always perplexed when asked, “Do sound waves
travel in a vacuum?” Demonstrate this concept with the Buzzer
in a Vacuum device. The buzzer operates on a DC power source.
Turn the power on, and it buzzes loudly. Connect a vacuum pump
to the jar assembly and turn on the pump. As air is pumped out
of the jar, the sound of the buzzer becomes fainter. When all the
air is removed, you can barely hear the sound. Slowly allow air to
re-enter the jar and the sound of the buzzer becomes stronger.
Requires 1/4" tubing. Vacuum pump available separately.

Bell Jars
High quality, flint glass bell jars. Glass is crystal clear,
allowing students to easily view experiments performed
inside the jar. Bell jars with a ground glass stopper offer the
flexibility for evacuation or for pressurizing the inside of the
jar using an external air source/pump. The nickel-plated
vacuum plate (AP8618) works well with both the large and
small bell jars. The polycarbonate plastic plate (AP1869)
may be used with the large bell jars. Dimensions of small bell jars: 6" o.d. x 10" tall.
Dimensions of large bell jars: 10" o.d. x 16" tall.

Bell Jar, Plastic
An easy-to-use, lightweight bell jar. The jar is transparent
amber. It inverts on top of a vacuum base plate. The jar seals
against a neoprene gasket in the AP1869 vacuum plate (see
page 241). Made of polyetherimide (PEI). PEI has good to excellent
chemical resistance to acids, bases, aliphatic alcohols
and hydrocarbons, and saturated, halogenated hydrocarbons.

This large demonstration bell is perfect for many topics in physical
science. Banana plug jacks make for easy connections. Operates on
a 6-volt battery. Bell assembly is 18 x 9 x 4.5 cm and includes a 9 x 9

Vacuum Pump
• Place strips of masking tape or electrical tape up, down and around any vessel you use
under reduced pressure.
• Always provide a relief valve of some kind to enable the slow release of vacuum.
• A false conclusion is that the vacuum produced
by a water aspirator will not create a
collapsing force, but a water aspirator may create a collapsing force equal to 80% of that
produced by a vacuum pump.
• Do not pry a bell jar away from the vacuum base. Slide the bell jar from side to side while
lifting.
Vacuum Chamber with Plate
Save money! Purchase a complete vacuum chamber system.
Safe polycarbonate bell jar is 6" in diameter, stands 9" tall and
has excellent chemical resistance. Clear plastic allows for
easy observation of air pressure effects. Vacuum plate is also
polycarbonate plastic with an outside diameter of 71/2". The sidemounted
tubing adapter accepts 1/4" i.d. vacuum tubing (AP8789).
