Wind Energy—Student Laboratory Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Each student group constructs a windmill with two interchangeable fans of three and
four blades, respectively. Expose each windmill to a portable fan to measure the time
required for the torque of the windmill shaft to lift a weight a given distance. From
the data, students are able to determine the power produced from the two different
blade designs and calculate which is more efficient.
Complete for 30 students working in pairs. Small portable fans are required but not
included. Fans may be shared among student groups. Includes Flinn Exclusive STEM
Integration Guide.

AP7512 Wind Energy—Student Laboratory Kit $47.30
Wind Generator
Easy to assemble, this little-turbine-that-could produces enough electricity to power
LED bulbs, a small power output board, and other devices such as mini water pumps
and buzzers. Turbine can be easily adapted for possible inquiry activities challenging
students to make different types of blades in the classroom or figure out how to adapt
the turbine to yaw (or rotate) to face the wind. Kit includes the full turbine, a power
output board with lights and sound generator, a pair of clip wires, and instructions
with easy-to-follow assembly directions, experiments, and tips and hints.

Wind Education Kit
Using this miniature realistic wind turbine, students can evaluate the pitch, or angle,
of the blades and then investigate how pitch and number of blades affects power
output. Students also learn how the turbine protects itself under strong wind conditions
by stalling or reducing rotational speed. Up to 12 blades can be installed at a
time and the kit includes three different types of profiled blades and one type of
polypropylene sheet blades. Comes with an LED voltmeter, music maker, and LED
lights to demonstrate the power created from the captured wind energy as well as
an instruction manual with experiments, assembly guide, and background history. A
definite real-life application—the 3-phase AC alternator used in the turbine is similar
to the one used in actual commercial wind turbines.

Wind-Powered Generator
This wind generator is a mini-research unit on wind power and windmill design. The
unit comes with a lab manual with nine detailed experiments using the generator.
• Speed/voltage relationships • Blade number and arrangement
• Maximum rpms and voltage • Driveshaft ratios
• Wind speed effects
Experiments can be done indoors with fans or outdoors with natural winds.
The generator has a weighted base, a structural aluminum tower, a wind-seeking
tail assembly, removable fan blades, and convenient binding posts for electrical
measurements.
