The standards may have changed, but some things never go out of style!
Flinn’s existing “classic” labs for AP® Chemistry are still valid and may still
be used in the updated curriculum! Only six labs in your curriculum must be
inquiry-based to meet College Board requirements. If you have clear favorites
among your existing labs, please continue to do them. If students learn from
the activities and enjoy them, then they are winners and should keep a place
in your lab.
Flinn Inquiry Transition Guides are available! These guides are 2–3 pages
each and include an Opportunities for Inquiry section. This section describes
several approaches that may be used to adapt the classic lab procedure to
guided inquiry. The guides also show how each lab aligns with the Enduring
Understandings, Essential Knowledge, Learning Objectives and Science
Practices in the revised AP Chemistry Curriculum Framework. Complete for

CHEMISTRY ADVANCED PLACEMENT®
Acid–Base Titrations
In this three-part laboratory, a basic solution is first standardized against a known
solid acid (KHP). This standardized base solution is then titrated against an unknown
acid solution to determine the acid solution’s molarity. In the third part, the Ka of
the solid acid KHP is calculated from the data of the titration curve obtained from
plotting the pH of the solution versus the volume of NaOH solution added. The lab
provides the recommended familiarity with the process of titration using indicators
and pH meters.
