Optics and Light—Diffraction, continued
Ultrasonic Grating
Apparatus
The Ultrasonic Grating Apparatus is
both a unique demonstration of the
interaction of longitudinal sound
waves and transverse light waves
and also a method for the precise determination of the speed of sound in liquids.

Optics and Light—Polarization
SpectroBurst™ Viewers
SpectroBurst™ viewers consist of diffraction gratings (singleaxis
and double-axis) set in circular frames. The frames click
together and can be rotated to observe different diffraction
patterns. A great introduction to diffraction and light. Includes
multifunction white LED flashlight with magnetic base and
instructions for a Diffraction Detective™ game.

Basic Polarized Light—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Introduce your students to the principles of polarization
using this fun kit. The activities may be used to
demonstrate the transverse wave characteristic of light
and to illustrate the properties of birefringence and
interference colors. The effect of crystal structure on the
properties of light is also observed. Kit includes materials
for each demonstration and complete instructions.
Note: Requires an overhead projector.

AP9307 Basic Polarized Light—Demonstration Kit $53.15
Polarizing Film
55/8" x 6" sheet of linear polarizing film. Each sheet is
laminated to protect the film from damage, yet can
be easily cut to any size.

Optics and Light—Reflection and Refraction,
Optics Benches
Magnetic Optics and Ray Box Set
Optics the whole class can see! Ray box and accessories
are magnetic and can be placed on the included
whiteboard or any steel whiteboard. Comprehensive set
is complete with everything you need to demonstrate
optics concepts of reflection, refraction, focal length, colormixing,
and more. Whiteboard is 24" x 171/4" and can be set
up in a tall or wide format. Durable, double-ended ray box
contains a halogen lamp cooled by a built-in fan. One end
is designed with a cylindrical lens and slots to insert slit
plates to create one, two, three or four parallel beams. The
other end has places for color filters and two adjustable
mirrors that can be moved to any angle to study color mixing. Includes whiteboard,
ray box, convex lens, concave lens, semicircular lens, rectangular lens, right angle
prism, equilateral prism, 30°/60°/90° prism, hollow rectangular cell for water refraction,
plane mirror, adjustable convex/concave mirror, seven color filters, seven color
paddles, 10" x 10" white card screen, card protractor circle, magnet to hold protractor,
experiment manual, and convenient storage box. Prisms and lenses are acrylic.

Blackboard Optics Kit
All you need is a chalkboard to conduct
optics experiments and demos with high
visual impact—without turning out the
lights! Vivid demonstrations can be set up
quickly and easily. The lenses, mirrors and
other components average 3.8 cm thick
and 20 cm high, so they’re easy to see even from the back of the room. Two adjustable
ray projectors provide light ranging from a thin pencil to a divergent cone. Once you
have the experiment set up on the chalkboard, use the chalkboard to highlight axes,
normals, tangents, vertical rays and equations relating to the ongoing
experiment. A
real stimulus for your optics unit. Very effective for lab practical test questions!
The durable acrylic components are packed in a sturdy box. Lenses, mirrors, prisms
and light sources attach securely to the chal board in seconds. Many components can
be rotated without shifting supporting brackets during an experiment. Includes instructions
and a variety of suggested experiments. Requires a transformer like our AP5945.

Simulated Double-Slit
Interference—
Demonstration Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
Stack two identical circle patterns together
on an overhead projector. Slowly slide one
pattern over the other and the interference
pattern will clearly develop before
your eyes. Then measure the angles of the
interference bands to confirm the relationship between wavelength and slit separation.
Repeat the demonstration using the larger spaced circles to show how the
interference pattern is affected by “wavelength.” Circle Pattern Masters are provided
and can be photocopied onto transparency paper for students to follow along with
the demonstration at their desks. Includes complete demonstration instructions.
Note: Requires an overhead projector. Student transparency paper is not provided.
