HAZARD ALERT: Please do not allow students to inhale helium.
Government health agencies and industrial safety representatives have taken
strong stands against the practice of breathing helium to demonstrate the
change in pitch that occurs when breathing a lighter-than-air gas. Breathing
helium removes oxygen from the bloodstream, so it’s not the same and actually
worse than just “holding your breath.”

Before a Lab Even Starts
Many safety-conscious science teachers require students to pass a prelab
quiz before starting any lab activity. The prelab quiz encourages students
to understand laboratory and safety procedures before they even start.
According to a recent teacher survey, the number-one reason for accidents
in the science lab was “students’ failure to carefully read and understand
laboratory activity instructions.” A prelab quiz may help solve this problem.
