Optics and Light—Lasers
Lumirod
Shine a flashlight or laser into one end of the acrylic rod—the light will be guided
through the coiled pipe and emerge at the opposite end, perpendicular to the source.
The Lumirod is crystal clear so students will vividly see the light undergoing internal
reflection. The precoiled length of the Lumirod is 24 inches.

Laser Optics Lab
Students will measure wavelengths of light, construct optical levers, test a lens
for defects, investigate fiber optics phenomena, view a hologram, determine the
index of refraction of a liquid or a solid, along with many other experiments. The lab
includes three lenses, four mirrors, a coated beam splitter, triangular prism, beam
spreader, air wedge, transmission hologram, diffraction mosaic, diffraction grating,
fiber optics light guide, pair and interference plates, and polarizing and color filters.
Also includes a 68-page, 35-experiment teacher’s manual. A benchtop laser AP9246
is recommended, but a laser pointer can also be used.

Laser Pointer
The laser-beam projects a brilliant red dot, which can be seen easily in either a welllit
or darkened room. Arrives in a handy storage case with directions. Powered by
two AAA batteries, which are included. Wavelength is 645 nm, power output is less
than 5 mW, and range is 2,000 ft (600 m) in darkness.

Laser Pointer Education Kit
By: The Flinn Staff
In eight laboratory experiments, students will
use a simple laser pointer to measure the angle of reflection, determine the index
of reflection of water, learn about polarization, observe and evaluate total internal
reflection and use the property of diffraction to measure the wavelength of light
generated by the laser pointer. Nine teacher demonstration activities are also
provided. Includes detailed student handouts, background information, teacher notes
and enough materials for one student group. Some common household and laboratory
items are required for the teacher demonstrations. A laser pointer is required
and available separately.

Green Laser Pointer
The power and brightness of a benchtop laser for a fraction of the cost! This durable
laser pointer projects an intense green beam that can be seen up to several thousand
feet in darkness. Powered by two AAA batteries (included) and lasts as long as 3
hours on one set of batteries. Natural power fluctuations are regulated by a photodiode
feedback loop to provide a consistently bright beam. Other features include:
• Wavelength—532 nm
• Output power— < 5 mW
• Operating Lifetime—2000 hours
• Range—500 meters
